I prefer urban to contemporary but, whatever the name of it, the genre involves hard-boiled detectives in a supernatural world.
Angel? The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher?
The Weather Warden series by Caine

As of now, I'm also reading Dresden Files (the second: Fool Moon) because you're my bro and you recommended the series to me. ;D Hard-boiled detectives? Nah. Just psyched-out ones. heh For anyone except my bro (JesterJoker) -because he already knows this- if you want unprofessional yet hard-boiled, psyched-out ones, check out Fear Nothing or Seize the Night, both by Dean Koontz.

Urban fantasy, eh??
Neil. Effin'. Gaiman. - Especially Neverwhere. Weird city-within-London. I adore Neil Gaiman. American Gods sorta qualifies too, more contemporary than strictly urban. Mr. Wednesday FOR THE WIN!
Simon Green - The Nightside series... similar to Neverwhere. I like Simon Green's secondary characters more than his main character. Shotgun Suzie, anyone?? Razor Eddie, the punk god of something or other?!?!?
Laurel K. Hamilton - You know this one, Anita Blake. It's an urban fantasy landmark, I think, but I'm less than impressed with Anita Blake. I sorta enjoy reading about her adventures, but I have little desire to venture much further in the series, as I hear it degenerates into pr0nage.
Robin McKinley - Sunshine isn't exactly urban fantasy. It's sorta... contemporary-in-parallel-Earth fantasy. But I have to wave my 'I love Sunshine' flag in any book-ish discussion. This world has SO much potential, but I don't think the author has any plans to explore it further. d**n! This is a classic reluctant-magician allied with vampire against even meaner vampire plot AND IT WORKS!

Holly Black, Rachel Caine, Laura Anne Gilman...
There's a lot of this, especially young adult! So much to read...
